Martinez is located is a city in and the county seat of Contra Costa County. Martinez was incorporated in 1876. Martinez served as a weigh station during the California Gold Rush. In 1915 Shell Oil built an oil refinery near Martinez, which has sparked much of the growth in Martinez. Today, Martinez has more than 35,000 residents and still plays an important role as a port in petroleum processing.
