The city of Colma was incorporated as Lawndale in 1924 but changed its name to Colma in 1941. Much of the land in Colma is populated with cemeteries and the city is sometimes called the City of the Silent. In the early 1900’s the city of San Francisco outlawed the use of land for cemeteries and cemeteries began to be developed in Colma. Because of the numerous cemeteries in Colma some residents have coined the city motto as, “It’s great to be alive in Colma.”
