Atherton, CA
Atherton is a small residential city in San Mateo County. In 1923, Menlo Park tried to include Atherton then called “Fair Oaks,” into their lands. However, residents quickly learned that in order to keep their small town residential feel, they would have to incorporate separately. Today, Atherton is just less than five square miles and has a population of about 8,000. Atherton claims to have no business or industrial establishments within its town limits. It is commonly referred to as a “plain of oaks,” because of the numerous California Oak Trees though out the town.
