Alameda is located in Alameda County on an island adjacent to Oakland in the San Francisco Bay. Alameda is known for its Victorian homes; approximately 9% of its homes are of Victorian design. Alameda was chartered in 1916 and has a population over 72,000. One local attraction is the USS Hornet Museum, a moored aircraft carrier. The Oakland Raiders, an NFL football team, practice in Alameda. Because of Alameda’s location, many wind and kite surfers can be seen along Crown Memorial State Beach and Shoreline Drive where they can view the San Francisco skyline and the Oakland Bay Bridge. It is also home to the St. Joseph Hospital which is staffed by the Sister of Notre Dame.
