Medi-Cal Planning

Medi-Cal is a needs-based program funded jointly by the federal and state governments. While Medicare (the federal medical benefits program) provides substantial payments for hospitalization, it is limited with regard to benefits for nursing home care or in-home care. Medi-Cal, on the other hand, provides nursing home benefits to those who qualify for the program. Strict asset guidelines govern eligibility for the program, making Medi-Cal planning an important part of any estate plan.

An experienced estate planning attorney can discuss with you the many techniques available to help bring your assets within the limits established by the Medi-Cal program. Transfers or gifts are often used to establish Medi-Cal eligibility but are not always the most effective technique. The attorneys of Lonich & Patton can work with you to plan for establishing Medi-Cal eligibility to avoid or reduce the state's recovery claim for services provided through the Medi-Cal program.
